California Minimum Wage 2024

Effective January 1, 2024, the state-wide California minimum wage will be increased to $16.00 per hour due to a cost-of-living increase provision in the state’s minimum wage law. The Orange County minimum wage will be the same as California’s minimum wage, $16.00 per hour.

Effective April 1, 2024, the state-wide California minimum wage for fast-food workers employed at large restaurant chains will be $20.00 per hour.

Effective June 1, 2024, the state-wide California minimum wage for “covered healthcare employees”, healthcare facilities with 10,000 or more full-time employees, will be $23.00 per hour. Smaller healthcare facilities will range from $18.00 per hour to $21.00 per hour, depending on the criteria. Additional increases will take effect in subsequent years.

Effective January 1, 2024, employees in California must earn an annual salary of no less than $66,560 to meet this threshold requirement.

Effective January 1, 2023, the California minimum salary for employees who otherwise qualify to be exempt from overtime was $64,480 annually for employers of all sizes.

Effective January 1, 2023, the state-wide California minimum wage is $15.50 per hour due to a cost-of-living increase provision in the state’s minimum wage law. The Orange County minimum wage was the same as California’s minimum wage, $15.50 per hour.

Annual CA Minimum Wage Increases

Minimum wage rates are adjusted annually for inflation based on the national Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). California’s minimum wage is part of a law enacted in 2016, Senate Bill No. 3.

Conditions for Increasing California’s minimum wage:

  • 3.5% is the highest raise allowed in any one year.
  • The minimum wage cannot be lowered in subsequent years, even if there is a negative CPI.
  • The Governor can no longer pause a scheduled increase.

California Minimum Wage by County & City

  • Federal Minimum Wage is $7.25 per hour effective January 1, 2009.
  • CA Minimum Wage is $16.00 per hour effective January 1, 2024.
  • CA Minimum Salary (“exempt employee”) is $66,560 effective January 1, 2024.
  • Orange County Minimum Wage is $16.50 per hour. A higher minimum wage than the State of California has not been established by Orange County nor any Orange County city.
