Del Taco history

Ed Hackbarth got his start by managing Bells Hamburgers, for Glen Bell, of Taco Bell fame. Hackbarth and David Jameson then opened the first Del Taco in 1964 in Yermo, so technically the Barstow locations are not the first Del Taco. Since the first closed and the First Ave location is the oldest remaining, it is referred by corporate as Del Taco #1.

In 1976, Hackbarth and Jameson sold 50 Del Taco stores and the exclusive rights to use and develop the Del Taco name throughout most of the U.S. Ed, however, retained the rights to the three Barstow Del Taco Stores and the ability to always serve the original menu.

In 1988, Del Taco and Naugles restaurants merged into one single chain of Mexican fast-food restaurants. Interestingly, Hackbarth mentored Dick Naugle, who went on to found the Naugles chain.

In 2022, Jack in the Box acquired Del Taco for $575m but did not acquire the Del Taco restaurants in Barstow. They continue to be a family-owned business still serving up the original menu.
