The Coach House

The Coach House is a music venue and restaurant and features internationally-known acts, aspiring artists and cover bands.

Those familiar with the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema know the concept of having dinner while watching a show. The Coach House works in a similar manner. This venue has a capacity of nearly 500. Three hundred of the seats available for live events are reserved for diners–these seats are centered on the stage and closer to it.

A Brief History Of The Coach House

Great venues open and close all the time, but when the Golden Bear Music Hall in Huntington Beach closed in the 1980s, it left a vacuum waiting to be filled in the live music scene.

There are conflicting reports on when The Coach House actually opened. The Coach House official site bio says the venue was opened by Gary Folgner in 1980.

But the L.A. Times reported the venue actually opened in 1986, “with a show by English blues-rocker Robin Trower” and according to the Times it was an “immediate financial success” inspiring a host of imitators and competitors. The Times reports that all the others gave up trying to keep pace with the Coach House. That competition went away in less than a year.

When Coach House doors opened, the idea was originally to use the space as a Country & Western venue. But musically, Coach House shows would expand into jazz and rock and roll.

The official site is a bit thin on details, but as the years went by, Coach House shows became more popular, and more diverse and at times the venue served as a place where new artists could try out their material as well. Today area performers are encouraged to submit demo material for consideration (see above).
