Cross Roads Escape Games: The Weeping Witch

The Weeping Witch is a spirit that lures people close by, mimicking the sound of a woman crying. When people hear it wailing, they follow the sound into the darkness, thinking someone needs help. Once they get close enough, the Witch attacks and slowly sucks the life out of its victims. If you choose to enter Madam Ruby’s study, that is what is awaiting you. Will you be able to banish the evil spirit and end your family curse before the Weeping Witch consumes you too?

The Weeping Witch

The Weeping Witch is an escape room unlike any other. Created by Luke and Madison Rhoades of Cross Roads Escape Games, this is an interactive, theatrical experience that also happens to be an escape room. We were invited to try out the game just before it opened to the public, and this is what we thought:

I visited Cross Roads Escape Games to experience The Weeping Witch for myself, with two friends. We have all done escape rooms before so we thought we knew what we were walking into. We were wrong. This was better! I don't want to give too much away as I don't want to take away from your individual experience, but I can say this:

  • We loved the overall theme, design, and décor of the room. We felt like we really did step into Ruby's study complete with lab equipment, artifacts, and creepy dolls.
  • The game elements were challenging. There were three of us and we really had to put our heads together on a few of them to figure out how to solve them. There were a variety of puzzles to solve with different elements - some code based, some with pattern identification. Spoiler: we didn't make it out alive, so we didn't get to solve all of the game elements, but we almost made it, and we appreciated the thought that was put into developing the puzzles here. I was pretty impressed.
  • We loved the dummy in the corner. He threw us tips now and then, told us a few jokes, and we enjoyed his company. My friend had recently completed another escape room at a different location and she mentioned that this guided experience (with the dummy) was much more entertaining. She said the other location also provided tips to help you along the way, but it was just a normal voice from the people sitting in the back room watching, and they lacked enthusiasm and creativity. Not here. He was fun, playful, and helped us when we were stuck.
  • The special effects were cool and definitely added to the experience. The smells, the fog, the lights. There were even secret rooms that opened as we progressed.
  • The Weeping Witch was the star of the show. Yes, she makes an appearance. Several appearances. Again, I don't want to give too much away, but the appearance of the witch was terrifying (in a fun way). We screamed like 12 year old girls in a haunted house.

It's important to note that you will be in the escape room with only your group, but the weeping witch does enter the room a few times. These are jump scares only; the weeping witch will not touch you, especially if you huddle up with your crew, scream, and wave your arms wildly in front of you to create an imaginary bubble of protection like we did.

We don't recommend this for children, or people who scare easily. The Rhoades request all players be over the age of 14 for this one. And there are flashing lights, loud noises, and fog smells that may effect people who are sensitive to those types of things. But outside of that, we think you should go. Take your friends. This was the most fun I've had in a long time, and we plan to get a few more heads together so we can go back and try again.

Cross Roads Escape Games is an award winning escape room, rated #1 Best Escape Room in SoCal and #3 Best Escape Room in the nation. That's no surprise. They are great at what they do here. This is a great activity for Halloween, date night, or just a night out with friends.
