The District Tustin

The District at Tustin Legacy is an outdoor shopping and entertainment destination located in Tustin, California. At one time it was considered the largest outdoor shopping district in Orange County; the District features an impressive retailer list and the Union Market open-floor-plan dining area is an attraction all by itself.

A Brief History Of The District At Tustin

Thanks to actions authorized by the Base Realignment and Closure Act of 1990, Marine Corps Air Station Tustin closed in 1999. Part of the installation was turned over to the City of Tustin, an area that was redeveloped into what is known today as Tustin Legacy. In 2007, The District At Tustin held its grand opening, and brought in major retailers such as Borders, Best Buy, DSW, and many others.

The Great Recession hurt many major retailers; Borders was closed and liquidated in 2011, Best Buy reduced its store “footprint” to the tune of some 50 locations closed nationwide including one at The District.

While many retailers have come and gone over the years, but the ebb and flow of commerce being what it is, that’s no surprise in a large-scale retail and entertainment destination like The District. The early closures didn’t wind up setting The District back; today, it offers a combination of big-box anchor stores like Costco, Target, Michael’s, Vans, and Whole Foods along with more local options, bars, and specialty shops.

Things To Do At The District Tustin Legacy

There are plenty of permanent attractions including the AMC Tustin 14 movie theater, bowling at Bowlero, plus Pinot’s Palette, which is a paint-and-sip destination for adults who like to have a glass of wine or the adult beverage of their choice while painting.

There are also recurring events like lunchtime music in the AMC courtyard, and special events like Maker fests, and seasonal offerings like the Fall Cocktail Tour which has participating restaurants at The District offering specials and limited-edition cocktails.

The shopping here is impressive; you’ll find a detailed list of establishments at the end of this article. There are also pop-up and permanent attractions for kids including the Pop Jet Fountain outside the AMC 14, and the Splash Pad at the Union Market Courtyard.
