Coachella History

Coachella began in 1999 with founders Paul Tollett and Rick Van Santen. The first festival was a two-day event headlined by Rage Against the Machine, Beck and Tool. After skipping 2000, Coachella returned in 2001 and continued to grow. A second weekend was added in 2012, creating the two-weekend format used today.

Camping was introduced at the Empire Polo Club in 2003. Today the festival offers several camping and lodging options, although available accommodations and rules can change from year to year.
